Why Procrastinators Are Afraid of the Truth

Low key procrastination and other important stuff.

As I sit here in my office to write my first therapy blog for millennials and post millennials, I realize, that I have been putting this off for practically 12 months.

If I planned to start a blog when I bought this domain, I’d be over one year late. For real, I can’t believe I don’t have a single blog post in one year! 

 

It makes me realize two specific things about myself.

  1. I usually wait until the last perfect moment to get stuff done.
  2. I’m stuck in the comparison trap. You know, “other blogs are so much better than MINE” or “what do I know that hasn’t been said or read already? (another blog post for another day)

As for number one:

  • I enrolled for my first semester of college classes 5 days before freshman move in day! I had one week to buy (read: for my parents to buy) all the swag for my dorm room and classes!
  • I’m usually packing for trips/vacations as we’re loading the car!
  • Then I’m using my data package on my phone to get an internet signal on the road to complete any work that needs to be done before disconnecting.
  • LEAVING FOR SCHOOL/WORK ON TIME
  • Going to the gym (I finally make it at like 6:05pm…even on my days off)
  • Waiting for the “perfect moment” to start my own business

 

While we’re being open and honest here, do you indulge yourself in this ‘procrastination’ lie—

“The time pressure of doing things last minute increases and stimulates my creative juices.”

We all know, deep down, that this is not true.

It usually leads to lower grades in school and you just blow your resources.

You get what I’m saying, because we all procrastinate.

I bet there are 1 or 2 tasks on my list that you procrastinate doing too!

My list could keep going…

Basically, when we procrastinate, we’re doing it because we might feel anxious (subconsciously or consciously) and avoid doing an activity because we feel like doing a more enjoyable activity instead.

Wait, before I go on, let me check my e-mail and instagram feed…

 

Avoiding our anxiety provoking tasks just brings up more feelings, like…

FEAR.

FEAR of FAILURE. (OMG) | FEAR of REJECTION. (SUCKS) | OVERWHELM. (WTF)

Examples might include:

  • Homework or Work Projects (Fear of imperfection | Overwhelm)
  • Money, Budgets and Future Finances (Fear of failure)
  • Going To the Gym or Sticking to a Healthy Diet (Fear of pain)
  • Confronting Others or Being Assertive (Fear of rejection)

 

SO WHY DO WE PROCRASTINATE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY HOW CAN WE MOTIVATE OURSELVES TO USE PROCRASTINATION A LITTLE LESS?!?

 

IF you want to give yourself a little more time to do what is necessary for success, start here WITH me….

 

Make a list of 5-10 things you acknowledge or tend to put off to the last minute. Doing this can help us accept and adjust to conquer our habits of procrastination in the future. BONUS: next to the items on your list, write the anxieties and fears that come up when you think about that task or action.

My advice: Start building your self worth maybe with this thought “don’t expect to be perfect” and then start chunking your goal into smaller, easy to complete tasks. After all, didn’t the last time you completed something at the last minute, or,  dare I say, “early” make you feel a little bit good about yourself? I mean, you just attained or accomplished a goal which feels good, duh!
